“And the Geek shall inherit the Earth”
Never has a phrase been more true. Geek is the new Popular. I remember in primary school being one of the few girls who could name the superheroes on the cards that the boys tested me on. I could even name the artists. At home I played Prince of Persia and annoyed my brother my beating him at Tekken 3.
After school we’d watch X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Did I label myself a geek? Nope – I didn’t know the word. I just knew I liked the things that my brother and cousins liked.
But I love that more and more people are embracing the geek, just means I have more people to talk to about the things I love.
This year is a BIG year for geeky movies and this post serves more as a reminder for me so I have a place to refer back to.
So here we go!
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25
A lot of people didn’t like Man of Steel, but I did. Henry Cavill is a good Superman. I’m really looking forwardd to seeing Wonder Woman in action though. And also Jason Momoa as Aquaman – who doesn’t make an appearance in any of the trailers.
The Jungle Book – April 15
I loved the 1967 Disney animated version of this movie and I am well impressed with the realism that Jon Favreau has achieved with this movie. The trailer looks beautiful and amazing!
Captain America: Civil War – May 6
Iron Man vs Cap! Watching the trailer it’s obvious that this is loosely based on the comics. For one, Bucky has nothing to do with the price of eggs. And there are A LOT more characters involved than just the Avengers. In fact, Thor is dead. Whatever, let me not go down this road please.
I will just accept that this is the MCU version of Civil War and enjoy the story they have weaved.
X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27
I’ve not been very impressed with the X-Men movies, I didn’t enjoy Days of Future Past as much as First Class. I’m not even going to talk about the mess that is Last Stand or Origins: Wolverine.
Apocalypse looks like a bigger version of Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy. I didn’t even rrecognise him in that end credit scene.
But again, whatevs, let’s not knock something before we’ve seen it.
Warcraft – June 10
I have been waiting for this one since I’ve started playing this game 8 years ago. I am so beyond excited that I don’t even have words for how excited I am! It looks amazing! It looks perfect! It looks fantastic!
Star Trek Beyond – July 8
I don’t know about this one you guys. I LOVED the first one. The second one was okay. This didn’t excite. I’m going to watch it anyway.
The Legend of Tarzan – July 1
Alexander Skarsgard is Tarzan. Do you need me to say more words? Didn’t think so.
Ghostbusters – July 15
There’s nothing worse than a teaser trailer. What is that even? Apparently, it’s all we have till the 3rd of March. Interested to see the gender bend but I hope they do the old campy movies justice.
Suicide Squad – August 5
My number one question is who is Scott Eastwood playing? And also, will this fall into DC’s Justice League Universe.
Doctor Strange – November 4
Benedict Cumberbatch is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Sorcerer Supreme. Praise the Lord! Again, no trailer for this one yet.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – November 18
A new Harry Potter movie. A NEW HARRY POTTER MOVIE!!! JK Rowling basically wrote a whole new story because this book is a flimsy little textbook.
Moana – November 24
I love that Disney is diversifying the princesses. I know Lilo isn’t technically a princess but girl is my spirit animal. So I can’t wait to see what else Hawaii has to offer us.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – December 16
In between Episodes 7, 8 and 9 Disney is releasing a bunch of fill-in movies. Rogue One being the first of them which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.
It’s just started principle photography so again, no trailer.
Assassin’s Creed – December 21
The second big video game to movie we have this year. Starring Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch the descendant of Spanish assassin, Aguilar (who he also plays).
Anything here that you’re looking forward to?
Caryn says
Yessss, except for the X-Men hate. Michael Fassbender + Oscar Isaac in a movie = love!
Zayaan Schroeder says
It’s not hate Caryn! I said I’d give it a chance, jirre. Who knows, Oscar might save it! He might make Apocalypse not just another version of Ronan.
Kim Muller says
Holy cow!?! I want to watch them all!!!! Looking forward to this year of movies!
Luchae Williams says
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!! *faints*
Zoe says
I was SO skeptical about The Jungle Book originally because i loved the animated movie so much – i didn’t think any live action version could do it justice. BUT, the cast is incredible and I’m so amped for it! and all the rest of the movies on this list, obviously
