Why we’ve banned Peppa Pig for our kids

No, it’s not because pigs are haraam to eat and hence to watch because that’s ridiculous. So before all the Peppa Pig fans come at me with their pitchforks just hear me out. I too was a fan of old Peppa back in the day. But the more we watched the more uncomfortable I felt with not the stories they were telling but rather Pepper’s less attractive qualities.

One of my big issues with Peppa is that she’s rude and dismissive of Daddy Pig. Yes, Daddy Pig is a bit silly and tends to set himself up, but is that any reason to ridicule someone? Nope, and it’s not something I want my kids to see as normal.

The name calling in this show is also rather shocking. In one episode, Peppa has a treehouse and the password she decides on is “Daddy’s big tummy“. Poor old Daddy Pig does not feel very good about it but Mummy Pig happily says the password to get into the treehouse.

I’m not going to lie, as an adult, I positively cackled at her face in this scene where Peppa learns that her best friend Susie Sheep can whistle, but do I want my kids to be like that? No. Not at all. And as an adult, I know that’s a pretty rude thing to do.

To be honest Peppa is kinda bratty and it’s not the kind of behaviour I want my kids emulating. At their age, they are easily influenced by the things they watch. Peppa stamps her feet, bullies her brother, makes fun of her parents, falls out with her friends, whinges when she loses, pokes out her tongue and generally displays copious amounts of bad behaviour .

She is not a good friend. She always wants things her way and when she falls out with her friends, they find a solution that placates Peppa who has no idea what the word consequences means. She’s quite bossy and Rushdi started picking up some of her bad attitude with her need to always be right. It was infuriating to hear him parroting the way she would speak and things she would say.

Rude!

So this next point might not seem like a big deal to some, but I don’t like my kids to use the word ‘stupid’. Look, it’s just not nice to call people stupid and we teach our kids so, so when Peppa Pig and her family use the word like it ain’t no thang, it’s just not a great example.

I know it seems like I’m asking a lot from a kids TV program and I am not against TV for kids because Lord knows I need some time to do some work, clean or cook supper. But I do want the things that they watch to be educational, fun and just nice man!

I get that the idea behind Peppa Pig is to show kids how not to behave and learn the lesson to overcome these ugly traits. It’s the same idea behind Charlie and Lola. But I prefer something like Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood, where the kid is not bratty and my kids still learn how to be good friends,  nice people and how to navigate the ups and downs of life.

    Thank you! So glad I’m not the only one that feels this way about the show.

    Yeah, I’ve been around a few Peppa fans and they’re often* very (rhymes with) schmentitled! And it’s essentially written for those types*, a topic for my wife and I currently is how to guide our one through this cause you can stop it at home but it’s out there! At school, on the playground, at the birthday parties 🤷🏽‍♂️

    * Don’t get me wrong.

      I find that they tend to ignore the merch of the things they don’t watch. I’ve just told the grandparents that they’re not allowed Peppa Pig and why. And also, we’ve also told our kids that Peppa isn’t a nice friend so we don’t watch that.

    Love this Zayaan! I stopped my daughter from watching it shortly after coming to the same conclusions. It’s so easy to just tune out when you’re cooking and you can’t ALWAYS control what they see/hear. But man does this show leave a bad taste in my mouth. So glad you said it! ❤️
