Why do I even waste my money on toys?

I love baby toys. I probably love baby toys more than my baby does. So I buy her all sorts of toys and even more so whenever I walk past the goddamn Crazy Store. But do you think she play with the bladdy things? No. Well, okay that’s not true. She does sometimes but they are not her go-to thing when she wants to catch on nonsense entertain herself.

Here’s what she likes to play with.

Plastics drawer

Whenever I’m cooking or washing up in the kitchen, chances are Daari is packing out the plastics drawer. Then scurry off with her loot, likely the measuring cups or the Superman egg cup. Sometimes she’ll deposit her treasures in the drawer also. Which is why I found a plastic hammer in there the other day.

Pegs

Pegs are also a favourite. Mostly packing them out and then back in again. Sometimes she just packs them out and leaves a minefield for someone to injure themselves on. But she’s getting quite good at following instructions when I ask her to pack them back in.

Puzzles

Following a pattern here, she also loves puzzles. But mostly just unpacking Rushdi’s puzzle drawer and leaving them strewn across the floor like confetti. This is why most of the puzzles have a couple of pieces missing.

The broom

What is it with kids and brooms? She loves the fricking broom! Rushdi was the same and he still loves it. He’s progressed to sweeping up things if he’s made a mess. Let’s hope this lasts into their teens!

Shapes sorter

Do you remember this old school shapes sorter from Tupperware? I don’t think they even sell them anymore but we got it as a hand me down from either the kids Amma or one of their aunts. Anyway, these things are tough as nails and last for generations. She loves putting the shapes into this thing even though I have to show her where the shape goes in.

Stacking and building

She also loves stacking things. And not just her stacking toys (most of which have magically disappeared) but anything, even the Play-Doh pots. She is also starting to play with blocks now. We got given a set of those huge blocks from an ex-colleague of mine and Rushdi played with them for the longest time before he went on to Duplo. Daariya is loving building towers from blocks as well or just putting them together any way she can.

Wet wipes

Guys, the amount of times I’ve found this girl under a mountain of wet wipes is too much! She will sit studiously and quietly pulling a whole packet of wet wipes out then clean her foot with every single one. This is my fault, I should have put them away. But when two kids need your attention at the same time, something is sacrificed. And in this case it was the wet wipes.

Cars

She loves cars! It’s more than likely the influence from Rushdi, but she loves pushing around vehicles with him. Which is great because that means they play together but then they also fight over cars. Can’t win.

Books

Books will never be a bad buy. Ever. She’s quite into paging through books on her own but will only spend a little while listening to a story. So we’ll go page through any books she can get her hands on but the Priddy ones are a favourite because those are quite short.

Surprisingly she has not yet torn a soft page book and just pages through them. Touch wood.

Putting on clothes

Her current obsession is putting on clothes. Any and everyone’s clothes, she tries putting on either her one leg or over her head. So you’ll often come across her just walking around with a shorts around her neck like a snood. She will spend such a long time doing this and laugh herself silly or get really frustrated that something doesn’t fit.

So while I think that baby toys can be great and stimulating, I’ve become very particular about the toys that I buy for her. Mostly so that I don’t waste my money to be honest.

I find my 1 year old never plays with her baby toys, she loves box’s, empty plastic bottles and throwing everything at her reach on to floor 😂

Oh my word, yes the breaking of things. Even my 4-year-old still breaks his toys.

I can so relate to this. It’s like my kid plays ten seconds with a new toy and DONE, never again.

I think we buy toys for little ones because we feel we should or because we like them, mine also always preferred the things you mentioned …. and mud
