New Year, New Room

After 4 years, 3 months and 12 days, The Munchkin is finally, FINALLY, sleeping in his own room.

Some people achieve this amazing feat as young as 6 months, others take a bit longer but I’m glad we did it this way because the transition has been a really easy and natural process.

We co-slept with him since he was born. We tried very hard to get him to sleep in a cot but to be very honest, once he started teething I was too damn lazy to keep getting up and still go to work the next day. It was far easier to have him there to console him or boob him.

The house we were staying in at the time was far too big for him to be in his own room, just the thought of traipsing up and down every time he cried made me want to cry. And even with him in our big room, he was still in our bed. It just worked for us.

Then we moved to a two bedroom flat and I was very happy with the smaller space (less space to clean) but we were still in one room because we had accumulated a lot of… stuff. Which all just got stuffed in to the second bedroom.

And it wasn’t really a problem till The Potato came along and 4 people in a queen size bed is just madness. Because of course, this baby also wanted to sleep right next to me and I just couldn’t flipping deal!

So we got him his own bed that was still in our room but it was a big step for him. He struggled for a bit because he was used to sleeping next to someone but he soon got used to it.

We had been talking for a long time about clearing out The Room Where Stuff Goes To Die and actually give him his own space and this past weekend we finally finished our project.

And so far, so good. He loves having his own space to play in during the day and we seem to be getting a long somewhat better. And it seems to be going well at night too, mostly he sleeps through but occasionally one of us will have to sleep with him when he wakes at night. But it’s still in the adjustment period so it’s all part and parcel really.

He’s feeling like such a big boy, he’s so much happier and it’s made such a big change in the mood at home. It really helps to have our own spaces and we really underestimated the importance of it.
