Monthly Favourites

July Favourites

Welcome to another month of my favourite things. My July favourites are a mix of old and new. My movie this month is a couple of years old but it’s one of my favourites and the series is very new. I don’t have a beauty product this month because to be honest I only have that much girly in me and there are only so many bath/skin products a person can use in a month.

So, let’s get into it!

Movie: The Grand Seduction

This has to be one of my favourite movies. It was released in 2014 but I would watch it over and over, besides the fact that my TV husband Taylor Kitch is in it, it’s also hilarious.

It’s about how the residents of a small fishing community in Newfoundland must charm a doctor into becoming the town’s full-time physician in order to secure a vital factory contract. And the things they do to make him fall in love with the place are just over the top ridiculous.

Aside from Taylor the obvious MVP here is Gordon Pinsent. He’s just fantastic!

TV: Stranger Things

There are only 8 episodes of this series so if you can get your hands on it go for it! It’s done so well. It’s set in the 80s and pays homage to so many classic 80s movies and tropes (in a good way). The soundtrack is so good!

From it’s IMDB page:

This thrilling Netflix-original drama stars award-winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983 — inspired by a time when tales of science fiction captivated audiences. When Joyce’s 12-year-old son, Will, goes missing, she launches a terrifying investigation into his disappearance with local authorities. As they search for answers, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unnerving supernatural forces, and a very unusual little girl.

Book: A Throne of Glass series

July Favourites-Throne of Glass

After finishing Sarah J. Maas’s Court series, there was a big ol’ hole in my reading world. What the hell could replace that. So I started on her Throne of Glass series. At first it was slow going and I kept comparing it to the Court series, which was unfair because it’s a completely different story.

The story is about famous assassin Celaena Sardothien, who is chosen by the Crown Prince of the kingdom to compete in a competition to be his father’s Champion. But that’s just the jumping off point. It’s a story of hidden identities, accepting her fate and freeing the world from a tyrannical king.

While it did have a slow start by a few chapters in and I was hooked. The story has great characters as one of my favourites has to be Manon Blackbeak. Manon for President tbh. I also appreciate that while there was some romance involved, it’s not the main focus at all – it’s probably the c-plot.

I managed to devour all four books in a month, which is saying something seeing as I have a toddler but I read in every spare moment I could find.

The fifth book, Empire of Storms is being released on September 6th.

All the books are available on the Google Play Store:

Throne of Glass – R60.83

Crown of Midnight – R60.83

Heir of Fire – R67.60

Queen of Shadows – R60.83

Eats: Rooibos Almond Milk

Rooibos Almond Milk

I have a whole post in my drafts about my collection of teas but this is my latest addition called Rooibis Almond Milk from The Tea Merchant. I’ve been eyeing it for a while but couldn’t bring myself to pay the R50 delivery fee. Luckily I came across an actual store in Cavendish Square so I snatched some right up.

The description from The Tea Merchant’s website had me drooling:

Creamy tender almond milk taste: Rooibos Tea, Sliced Almonds, Cacao Bean Peels, Yoghurt Crispies, Caramel Cubes, Condensed Milk, Glucose Syrup, Unskimmed Milk Powder, Roasted Buckwheat, Malt Corn.

It certainly is very almondy.

Kid stuff: Mary Poppins

One of The Munchkin’s most favourite things lately is all the Mary Poppins songs.

Often in the mornings when he’s just woken up I will hear a tiny voice lying next to me singing: “It’s a jolly holiday with you Bert… Mommy, you turn!” and I’ll have to mumble from beneath the blankets “Gentlemen like you are few”.

He also loves Step in Time because who doesn’t!

So that’s it for this month. Do you have any suggestions for me to try for the month of August? Let me know in the comments because I’m running out of things to love mostly because I’m getting very tired and lazy towards the end of this pregnancy!

Oh yes, The Munchkin LOVES the songs. He starts singing them so randomly throughout the day. It’s the very best.
